Bryson Mozone's Game-High 23 Points Not Enough to Overcome Hot-Shooting Camels Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite posting its sixth game this season with a field goal percentage greater than 50 percent, USC Upstate men's basketball was unable to overcome a hot-shooting Campbell team (63.5 percent shooting) Saturday afternoon at the G.B. Hodge Center in an 80-71 setback.

Following up on a career-high scoring game (26 points) at Hampton, senior forward Bryson Mozone led the Spartans for the second straight game, pouring in a game-high 23 points to secure his fourth 20-plus point game of the season and third during Big South play. He finished the game, shooting 52.9 percent from the field as he added six rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Joining Mozone in double-figures and continuing his double-figure scoring streak, freshman guard Jordan Gainey added 14 points, shooting 54.5 percent from the floor while adding three steals, an assist, and a rebound.

How It Happened
First Half
  • Staking an early advantage, Upstate opened the game outscoring Campbell 6-2 with Jordan Gainey, Khydarius Smith, and Bryson Mozone knocking down a field goal.
  • Swinging momentum in their favor, Campbell answered with a 14-2 scoring stretch, posting separate 6-0 and 8-0 scoring runs to take an eight-point lead. Building its lead to double-digits, Campbell added a 5-0 scoring run to extend its scoring stretch to 19-4 and take an 11-point lead.
  • Trimming the Camel lead to two, Upstate heated up from beyond the arc as Mysta Goodloe, Jalen Breazeale, and Gainey hit from long range during an 11-2 scoring run. Closing the run, Smith threw down a thunderous dunk.
  • Building back its lead, Campbell used a 7-0 run and 10-2 overall scoring stretch to extend the advantage back to 10 with just under five minutes to play in the half. Upstate cut back into the lead with a 7-2 scoring run to answer the Camels' scoring run and trim the lead to five.
  • Closing the half and building their lead to double-digits, the Camels outscored the Spartans 8-3 down the stretch, building the lead up to as many as 12—the largest of the half. Mozone cut the lead to 10 heading into the locker room with a turnaround jumper in the final second of the half.
Second Half
  • Opening the half, Upstate trimmed into Campbell's lead, cutting it to single digits by hitting a pair of threes to begin the second half with Dalvin White and Mozone knocking down the treys. Mozone nearly added a second three, drawing a foul and stepping to the line to convert all three attempts from the charity stripe.
  • Keeping the Camel lead in single digits and within striking distance, the Spartans stayed in lockstep with its opponent, going shot-for-shot and run-for-run with Campbell, outscoring Campbell 15-12 over the half's first five minutes.
  • Pushing its lead back to double-figures, Campbell embarked on a 7-0 scoring run to build a 14-point lead and a double-digit advantage it would hold for over 14 minutes of action in the second half. Beginning with the 7-0 scoring run, the Camels outscored Upstate 23-11 heading into the final three minutes, eventually building its lead to as many as 19.
  • Closing the game, Upstate crafted its longest scoring run, 10-0, to trim the lead to single digits at the final buzzer. Mozone paced the run with five points with White and Gainey adding three and two, respectively.

Notable
  • Leading Upstate with a game-high 23 points, Bryson Mozone secured consecutive 20-plus point scoring outings for the first time in his career. Overall, Saturday's game marked his fourth 20-plus point game of the season and his third during Big South play.
  • Adding 14 points Saturday, Jordan Gainey extended his streak of double-figure scoring games to 11, a streak that encompasses each of the Spartans' 10 Big South games. Each of the 11 games in the streak has seen Gainey score 14 or more points.
