Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

A Huge Night From Women's Basketball's Rebekah Gordon Delivers Head Coach Jason Williams His 200th Career Victory as Spartans Down Clinton College Monday Evening

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It proved a historic night at the G.B. Hodge Center Monday evening as USC Upstate women's basketball continued its season-long four-game homestand with a 71-50 victory over Clinton College, a milestone victory in the career of head coach Jason Williams that featured a memorable double-double for senior forward Rebekah Gordon.

Monday's Spartan victory marks the 200th in Williams' career as the 12th-year coach captured his 29th victory helming the Upstate program. The 21-point win also is a memorable night for the Spartan wearing number 21 as Gordon finished the evening with a season-high 17 points and a career-best 23 rebounds for her third career double-double.

Gordon's 23 boards are the most in a game by a Spartan since 2016 while marking the most by a Big South player since 2015, ranking as the third-most single-game rebounds in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) and tied for the third-most single-game rebounds in Big South history.

Joining Gordon in double-figures, freshman guard Cassie Gallagher turned in a career-high-tying 13 markers. Just shy of double-figures, junior guard Jeni Levine registered nine points and redshirt freshman forward Emma Blair added a career-high eight markers.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • Kickstarting the game's scoring and her big night, Rebekah Gordon notched the first points of the evening, burying a hook shot from the middle of the lane. Following a lengthy stretch without a field goal, Upstate knocked down three consecutive field goals as it built a six-point advantage with buckets from Vera Soderblom, Gracie Barnes, and Olivia Forster.
  • Responding to the Spartans' largest lead of the opening stanza, Clinton College offed its longest scoring run of the first half, a 7-0 spurt to take its lone lead, a one-point advantage with 1:58 to play in the quarter. Upstate, however, answered with the final four markers of the quarter to regain the lead for the final time.

Second Quarter
  • Spanning the quarter break, Upstate upped its scoring run to six as Jeni Levine sank a pull-up jumper. Doing themselves one better, the Spartans answered the first Golden Bear points of the quarter with a 7-0 run, outscoring Clinton College 13-2 over the span.
  • Holding the Golden Bears to just two field goals in the quarter, Upstate wrapped the second quarter with its longest scoring stretch of the first half—again besting its previous long by one point—with an 8-0 run. Five of the eight points came from the free throw line with the lone exception a three-ball from Cassie Gallagher.

Third Quarter
  • Coming out of the halftime locker room, Clinton College hit two of the new half's first three field goals, sandwiching the layups around a Gallagher trey. Upstate responded to the second Golden Bear field goal with a 14-2 scoring stretch, fueled by the game's longest scoring run, a 10-0 spurt in favor of Upstate.
  • Fending off a small challenge, five of eight points following the Spartans' game-long run, Upstate fashioned another lengthy scoring run, this time an 8-0 stretch. Again, five of the eight points came from the charity stripe with the lone field goal a triple from AC Markham.

Fourth Quarter
  • Answering a quarter-opening jumper from Markham, the Golden Bear reeled off their longest run of the night, an 8-0 scoring stretch. Upstate's response formed behind a three from Macy Wike and a jumper from Gordon.
  • Clinton College tightened the game over the final five minutes of the night, outscoring the Spartans to the tune of 12 to five with Upstate hitting one field goal in the stretch. The field goal, however, came from long range out of the hands of Cali Levine.

Notable
  • Pulling in 23 rebounds Monday, Rebekah Gordon recorded the third-most rebounds in a single game in Big South Conference history. Her total marked the most by a league player since 2019 is one of eight games in conference history to see a player record 23 or more rebounds.
  • Gordon's total also stands as the third-most single-game rebounds in the Spartans' Division I era (2007-pres.). Her 23 boards are the most by a Spartan since Brittany Starling corralled 24 rebounds versus Florida Gulf Coast on Feb. 15, 2016.
