FRIPP ISLAND, SC -- The USC Upstate Women's Golf team made their second appearance in three seasons competing for the Big South title. In the match play semifinals, the Spartans secured a 3-1 victory over High Point, with Riley Kosney, Supatta Puttanavarat, and Preaw Nontarux claiming wins over their Panther counterparts. Alexis Reili found herself in a 20th-hole sudden-death overtime when play was halted.
Puttanavarat engaged in a highly contested battle with High Point's Anna Howerton, with the Fab Freshman ultimately sealed the victory on the 18th hole with a clutch putt.
Redshirt senior Preaw Nontarux initially built a three-match advantage, which was later narrowed to one, but she held steady to secure the win.
Rylie Kosney maintained a comfortable lead throughout the semifinals, never truly facing a threat on the green.
With the semifinal victory, the Spartans advanced to the Championship to face top-seeded Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers took an early two-point lead on Spartan golfers at the end of the first holes and maintained it throughout the 18 holes. Praew Nontarux secured the lone victory for the Spartans in the Championship round, defeating Madison Freeman.
"This was an incredible run for our team and program. They battled through over 100 holes in four days. 'Proud' is an understatement," said head coach Todd Lawton. "While we are heartbroken, we're also excited to have competed for the Big South crown."
Coach Lawton additionally extended his gratitude to the conference for organizing a great tournament and congratulated Charleston Southern on their "great championship match and win."
"I'd like to thank Preaw and Mudmee (Yord-in) for the incredible careers they both have given our Upstate program. I am forever honored and grateful to have coached them," stated Lawton.
