SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Returning home for alumni day, USC Upstate women's soccer faced Longwood in an afternoon match-up. Earning their seventh victory of the season, the Spartans defeated the Lancers 2-0.
The first half of the match saw each team trade shots, but nothing could get past the keepers.
Upstate found the back of the net first in the second half, with
Paige Armstrong netting her fourth goal of the season off a passing sequence from
Dara Russo and
Hannah Johnson. Armstrong totaled two shots, both on goal.
Nine minutes later,
Savannah Noll scored her first goal of the season off a free kick that was drawn by
Caroline Simpkins. Playing all 90 minutes of the match, Noll had three shots with one on goal.
Dara Russo added three shots of her own, followed by
Riley O'Bryan with two shots on goal.

How It Happened
1st Half: Dara Russo claimed the first shot of the match three minutes in. Four minutes later, Longwood fired off a shot but sent it high right. The Lancers took four shots over two minutes, but all of them were off target. At the 25-minute mark,
Dara Russo took a shot on goal, but it was saved by the Longwood keeper.
Savannah Noll took her first shot of the match, but sent it high over the goal.
Marley Gerber made her first save of the day with 13 minutes of play left in the half.
2nd Half: Upstate tested the Longwood keeper, firing off three shots just minutes apart courtesy of
Paige Armstrong and
Riley O'Bryan, but all were saved by the Lancers keeper. In the 70
th minute,
Paige Armstrong scored the go-ahead goal off assists from
Dara Russo and
Hannah Johnson.
Savannah Noll followed, netting the insurance goal nine minutes later to make the score 2-0.
Marley Gerber made her second save of the day at the 80
th minute, earning the shutout win.
