SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A day after totaling 14 unanswered runs to secure an 11-run victory, USC Upstate baseball increased the total to 27 unanswered Saturday, securing the series victory with a 15-4 win over Winthrop at Cleveland S. Harley Park. The Spartans' 27 unanswered runs stand as the second-longest streak for Upstate this season, sitting behind the 34 unanswered from its series at Charleston Southern in late March.
The catalyst for the Spartans Saturday, junior first baseman
Wylie Waters picked up another four-RBI contest, ending his night 3-for-4 at the plate. Through two games on the weekend, he's recorded five hits, two doubles, and eight RBI against the Eagles. Redshirt junior rightfielder
Scott Campbell joined Waters with a team-high three hits on the evening, registering three RBI.
Recording the team's other multi-hit, multi-RBI effort, junior catcher
Preston Lucas collected two hits and two RBI. Adding the Spartans' final multi-RBI game, sophomore shortstop
Vance Sheahan slugged a two-run home run, his fifth long ball of the year.
On the mound, redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher
Amp Phillips offered his second consecutive quality start, tossing 6.0 innings of three-hit baseball while striking out five. Finishing the game, junior righty
Braden Consaul tied a career-high with four strikeouts in a scoreless frame.

How It Happened
- B1: Taking advantage of four consecutive free bases to begin the home half of the first, Upstate scratched the day's first run on a bases-loaded HBP to Johnny Sweeney. Scott Campbell followed with a two-run single before an RBI groundout and RBI single from Preston Lucas and Wylie Waters, respectively, capped a five-run frame.
- B3: Three straight one-out singles in the third turned into three additional tallies for the Spartans in the third. Henry Zenor lifted a sac fly to center for the first run with a two-base throwing error by Winthrop leading to the final two.
- B4: Back-to-back doubles from Campbell and Lucas hung another run on the board in the fourth, pushing the advantage to 9-0.
- B5: Kickstarting a four-run fifth, Vance Sheahan launched a two-run homer to left to begin the inning's scoring. An RBI single from Campbell and a sac fly from Waters added two more, wrapping the 13-run unanswered streak to start the game.
- T6: Using a sac fly of its own, Winthrop scratched a tally in the sixth off the bat of Chancellor Jennings.
- T7: Stringing another run, the Eagles' Chazz Grossington ripped an RBI double down the leftfield line.
- B7: Adding the final two RBI in his four-RBI day, Waters split the gap in left-center with a double, chasing home Kai Tullos and Jack Austin.
- T8: Taking advantage of a pair of Upstate errors in the frame, Winthrop scored a pair in the eighth, ending the night's scoring.
