Women's Soccer Opens Season with 1-0 Win Over Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate women's soccer traveled to Wofford for the first match of the season. The Spartans walked away with a 1-0 victory after causing a Terrier own goal in the first half.
 
Both Upstate and Wofford put up six shots, with the Spartans aiming four on target.
 
Freshman defender Gwen McAllister helped Upstate get on the board. McAllister sent the ball up to the Wofford backline, where it deflected off the Terrier defender and over the goalkeeper's head for the Spartan advantage.
 
Between the pipes tonight, sophomore goalkeeper Marley Gerber posted a clean sheet to start the season, playing all 90 minutes of the match.

How It Happened
1st Half: The Spartans earned their first corner kick of the night just three minutes in, followed by Wofford drawing a corner kick 11 minutes later. Play equaled out until the 19th minute when Upstate caused the Terrier own goal. The Spartans only got one other shot off in the half.
 
2nd Half: Beginning the second half, Hannah Johnson wasted no time getting a shot off just 20 seconds in. Kiley Johnson, Caroline Simpkins, and Savannah Noll were the other Spartans to get shots off in the second half.
 
 
Notable:
  • This is the first time Upstate has defeated Wofford since 2019
  • Marley Gerber posted her first career clean sheet, not allowing a single shot on goal. She also earned a new career high in minutes played with 90
  • Caroline Simpkins set a new career high in minutes played, shots, and shots on goal
  • Marley Walker earned a new career high in minutes played with 30
  • Maddie Smith recorded a career high in minutes played with 51
  • Morgan Nelson set a career high in minutes with 65
  • Raegan Bell earned a career high in minutes played with 59
  • Hannah Johnson set a career high in minutes played with 51
