How It Happened
Entering the weekend without a match featuring three or more players reaching double-digit kills, Upstate fashioned back-to-back such matches to close the Blazer Invitational, seeing three attackers hit the 15-kill threshold Saturday. The feat marks the first match since Sep. 2, 2011, at Radford to see three or more Spartans with 15-plus kills.
Â
Headlining the effort for the Upstate offense, freshman outside hitter Summer Kohler threw down a match-best 18 kills—one shy of her career-high and her third career match with 15-plus kills. Middle blockers, senior Ady O'Grady and freshman Kensley Haneline, joined Kohler to complete the trio, accruing 16 and 15 kills, respectively, the latter a career-best total.
Â
Orchestrating the offense, sophomore setter Kamyla Vega David, for the second time this week in a four-set match, passed out 50-plus helpers, ending the afternoon with 51. In her third career 50-plus-assist match, she secured her 23rd career double-double, picking up 15 digs.
Â
Freshman libero Sophia Overholt headed a trio of Spartans with 10 or more digs, recording a career-best 19 digs. Joining Overholt and Vega David, sophomore defensive specialist Hannah Campbell completed the trio with 13 scooped balls of her own.
