Women's Soccer Secures 2-0 Win Over VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – On the road again, USC Upstate women's soccer traveled to VMI for a Sunday afternoon match. The Spartans walked away with a 2-0 victory over the Keydets, holding the advantage in shots, shots on goal, and corners.

Upstate wasted no time getting things going on offense, drawing a corner four minutes into the game, followed by a shot from Riley O'Bryan. Play between both teams leveled out until the 42-minute mark of the first half, when Maddy DeCola capitalized on a mistake from VMI's defense to net her first goal as a Spartan.

Out of the break, the Spartans' defense remained strong, and with ten minutes left, Riley O'Bryan netted her second career goal off an assist from Dara Russo. O'Bryan led the team in shots with three, all of them on target. Maddie Smith, Caroline Simpkins, and Maddy DeCola all added two shots with one on goal.

Goalkeeper Madison Ejgird made her second career start, earning her first clean sheet while tallying two saves.

How It Happened
1st Half: VMI claimed the first shot of the match just a minute in, but Madison Ejgird made the save to keep the score 0-0. The Spartans drew their first corner kick four minutes into the match, followed by a shot courtesy of Riley O'Bryan. Almost a minute later, Upstate drew another corner kick, this time followed by a shot from Kiley Johnson. At the 28-minute mark, VMI took their second shot, but Ejgird was there to make the save. Maddy DeCola scored for the Spartans at the 42-minute mark.

2nd Half: Upstate's Maddie Smith took the first shot of the second half, but it was saved by the Keydet keeper. The Spartans drew two consecutive corner kicks around the 50-minute mark. VMI got a shot off ten minutes later, but it went wide. Play evened out until the 80th minute, when Dara Russo found Riley O'Bryan for the second goal of the game.
