
Spartans Fall to High Point in Three Sets

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to High Point Friday night at the G.B. Hodge Center, falling 25-13, 25-15 and 25-13. The Spartans move to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in Big South play, while High Point improves to 8-4 and 2-0 in conference action.
Set One
High Point opened the match with a 4-1 run before the Spartans ripped off four in a row behind kills from Tehillah Garrison, Kensley Haneline, and Summer Kohler, taking their first lead of the contest at 5-4. The set remained close before a pivotal 6-1 burst by the Panthers put the visitors in the driver's seat as High Point took an early 1-0 match lead.
Set Two
High Point jumped ahead early, building a 7-2 advantage. Upstate responded with a 5-2 stretch to cut the deficit to 12-9, including a Haneline kill and a Kohler kill. The Panthers then extended their lead and finished the set with a service ace to win 25-15.
Set Three
Upstate took an early 1-0 lead on a High Point attack error before the Panthers seized control of the final frame, racing out to a comfortable 14-5 advantage. The lead ballooned to double digits down the stretch as High Point closed out the match in three sets.
Kohler finished with a team-high seven kills and added five digs and an assist. Haneline recorded three kills, two blocks and two digs, while Murray finished with four kills and three block assists. Sophia Overholt anchored the defense with 14 digs while Sarah O'Connor dished out a team-high 10 assists. Kamyla Vega David contributed seven assists and four digs.
Upstate returns to action tomorrow afternoon as it hosts the Highlanders of Radford in Big South Conference action at the Hodge. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
