Head Coach Sam Odell adds Graduate Assistant Erin Weir to Staff

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate women's soccer has announced the addition of Erin Weir to its coaching staff, with the former Canisius University standout joining the Spartans as a graduate assistant for the 2026 season.
Joining the program this summer, Weir comes to Spartanburg after building an impressive playing and coaching resume at both the collegiate and club levels. A four-year member of the women's soccer program at Canisius, Weir also brings coaching experience from Western New York, where she has worked extensively in player development.
"I'm thrilled to begin my first year at Upstate and look forward to learning, growing, and working alongside an incredible coaching staff." Weir said.
A native of North Tonawanda, New York, Weir concluded her collegiate playing career at Canisius in 2024 following a standout senior campaign. Starting all 19 matches for the Golden Griffins, she recorded career highs with two goals, a team-leading eight assists and 12 points while helping anchor the Canisius back line.
Her performance earned her All-MAAC Second Team honors, while she was also named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week during the season. Weir recorded five assists over a two-match stretch against Le Moyne and Saint Peter's, including a career-high three assists against Le Moyne. She was also named to the MAAC All-Academic Team.
Weir was a consistent presence for the Golden Griffins throughout her four seasons, appearing in 72 matches and making 69 starts from 2021-24. As a sophomore in 2022, she helped a Canisius back line record eight shutouts and lead the MAAC with a 0.692 goals-against average. She earned MAAC All-Academic Team recognition in each of her final three seasons.
Prior to beginning her coaching career at Upstate, Weir established herself as an accomplished coach in Western New York. She served as head coach of the WNY Flash Girls 2011 Premier team, guiding the squad to a Thruway League Championship. She also worked as an assistant coach with the WNY Flash Girls 2018/2019 Pre-ECNL team, helping develop players preparing for elite competition.
Since 2025, Weir has also been a member of the coaching staff at The Training Pitch in Buffalo, a technical development program focused on individual skill development, technical proficiency and player growth.
Her experience with the WNY Flash extends back to her playing career. Before arriving at Canisius, Weir competed for the WNY Flash ECNL '03 squad, helping the club win NEWSS and Jefferson Cup championships. She also helped the Flash qualify for the ECNL National Championships in 2017 and 2019 and advance to the national semifinals in 2018.
Weir enjoyed a decorated prep career at Niagara Wheatfield High School, finishing with 71 goals and 53 assists. She was a four-time All-Niagara Frontier League First Team selection, earned multiple All-Western New York honors and helped Niagara Wheatfield capture the 2020 Section VI Class 1A championship.
