
Volleyball Earns Second Win of the Day, Beating Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – USC Upstate volleyball bounced back from an opening-set setback Friday evening, taking the next three frames to earn a 3-1 victory over Norfolk State. The Spartans captured the match by set scores of 20-25, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-21.
After dropping the opening set, Upstate responded with its most efficient offensive performance of the match in the second. The Spartans put down 15 kills against just three errors on 35 swings, hitting .343 in the frame. Upstate controlled the set on its way to a convincing 25-14 win that evened the match at one set apiece.
Sophia Spivey spearheaded the Spartan attack, turning in a dominant offensive performance with a match-high 18 kills against just one error on 29 attempts. Her .586 hitting percentage led Upstate as she finished with 19.5 points while also adding five digs and a service ace. Summer Kohler joined her in double figures with 13 kills and 14 digs, giving the Spartans another strong all-around effort.
Upstate carried its momentum into the third set. After Norfolk State pulled within one at 20-19 late in the frame, the Spartans answered by scoring five of the final six points. Sophia Overholt delivered an ace to set up match point before Spivey closed the 25-20 victory with a kill off an assist from Kamyla Vega David.
The Spartans then finished the job in a tightly contested fourth set. Upstate held a 21-20 advantage before pulling away down the stretch. Spivey accounted for kills that pushed the lead to 21-19 and later 24-21 before Bri Brathol delivered the match-clinching kill off a Vega David assist for the 25-21 decision.
Vega David directed the Upstate offense with a match-high 34 assists while also collecting 19 digs. Overholt anchored the back row with a team-high 22 digs and added eight assists, while Kensley Haneline contributed eight kills on a .357 hitting percentage. Tien Murray added six kills and played a key role at the net with three solo blocks and three block assists. Hannah Campbell provided a major spark from the service line, finishing with four of Upstate's eight aces.
As a team, the Spartans finished with 49 kills and hit .212 while holding Norfolk State to 42 kills and a .112 hitting percentage. Upstate also totaled 76 digs compared with 63 for Norfolk State.
The victory gives the Spartans a strong response after dropping the opening frame, with Upstate outscoring Norfolk State 75-55 across the final three sets to secure the four-set win.
