Spartans Drop 3-1 Contest at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – USC Upstate volleyball battled Clemson throughout Sunday afternoon at Jervey Gymnasium, but the Tigers ultimately secured a 3-1 victory over the Spartans, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 26-24.
The Spartans answered after dropping the opening set by taking the second. Upstate built a 10-5 before Clemson used a crucial scoring run over the middle part of the frame, trimming the deficit to 19-18. However, the Spartans outscored Clemson 6-2 down the stretch while pulling even in the match.
Clemson controlled the third set early, building a 14-8 lead. Upstate fought back with a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 15-12, but the Tigers answered and closed the set on an 10-3 run.
The fourth set featured several momentum swings. Clemson led 16-10 before the Spartans rattled off three straight points to pull within three. Upstate later scored three consecutive points to make it 18-17 before mounting a late comeback. Trailing 23-20, the Spartans scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 24-24, but Clemson scored the final two points to win 26-24.
Summer Kohler led the Spartans with 17 kills while hitting .368 and added 10 digs for her third consecutive double double. Kamyla Vega David recorded 30 assists and nine digs, while Sophia Overholt posted a team-high 15 digs. Kensley Haneline added seven kills.
USC Upstate returns to action on Friday, September 25, opening Big South Conference play, hosting UNC Asheville in the Ingles I-26 Rivalry Series. First serve from the Hodge is set for 6 p.m.
