SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind a two-goal performance from Liana Bryant and a three-point night from Jasmyn Mitchner, USC Upstate women's soccer earned a 3-1 road victory over crosstown rival Wofford Thursday evening at Snyder Field. The victory pushed the Spartans to 3-1-1 on the season, while Wofford fell to 2-3-1.
Bryant continued her strong start to the season by providing the opening goal in the 34th minute. After having a pair of shots saved earlier in the half, the forward finally broke through at the 33:19 mark to put the Spartans ahead 1-0. Upstate carried the one-goal advantage into halftime despite the two sides each attempting six shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Spartans wasted little time adding to their advantage after the break. In the 55th minute, Mitchner connected with Bryant, who found the back of the net for her second goal of the evening to extend the Upstate lead to 2-0. The assist marked Mitchner's first point of the match before she later added a goal of her own.
Wofford responded in the 68th minute when Bella Drummond scored off assists from Satya Tarafdar and Maya Lake, cutting Upstate's advantage to 2-1. The Terriers continued applying pressure shortly afterward, but goalkeeper Hannah Wilt came up with a save on Lake in the 71st minute to preserve the lead.
Upstate quickly regained its two-goal cushion. Just 14 seconds after Bryant exited the match, Mitchner delivered the insurance goal at 75:13, finding the back of the net to give the Spartans a 3-1 advantage. Upstate's defense took care of the rest, holding Wofford without a shot on goal over the final 19 minutes.
Bryant led the Upstate attack with two goals on four shots, putting all four attempts on frame and recording the game-winning goal. Mitchner was equally influential, finishing with a goal and an assist while placing three of her four shots on target. Together, the duo accounted for all seven of Upstate's points and all seven of the Spartans' shots on goal.
In goal, Wilt played all 90 minutes and made four saves while allowing just one goal to earn the victory. Defensively, Cansu Kara, Danielle Trovato, Katelyn Economopoulos, Annabelle Wunderlich, Raegan Bell and Kylie White each logged the full 90 minutes for the Spartans.
Wofford finished with an 11-8 advantage in total shots, but Upstate was far more efficient, placing seven of its eight attempts on goal compared to five of 11 for the Terriers. The Spartans also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks and committed six fouls compared to Wofford's eight.
