Men's Soccer Falls to Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – USC Upstate men's soccer continued its road swing Tuesday night, falling 3-0 to Wake Forest at Spry Stadium. The Spartans generated five shots on goal and continued to battle throughout the second half, but three different Demon Deacons found the back of the net to secure the result.
Upstate created the first scoring opportunity of the night just over three minutes into the contest. Caedon Reynolds put an attempt on frame, forcing Wake Forest goalkeeper Jonah Mednard into an early save.
Wake Forest responded by applying pressure to the Upstate defense, but goalkeeper Jarrett Wuerslin helped keep the match scoreless through the opening 24 minutes. Wuerslin made a pair of saves during the stretch before the Demon Deacons broke through at the 24:29 mark. Chandler Young opened the scoring off assists from Joel Torbic and Tate Lorentz to give Wake Forest a 1-0 advantage.
The Demon Deacons doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Mason Sullivan found the bottom-left corner of the net, sending Upstate into halftime trailing 2-0.
Wake Forest added its third and final goal shortly after the break, as Torbic scored in the 51st minute. Upstate answered with another opportunity just four minutes later when Reynolds placed his second shot of the match on goal, but Mednard was there for the save.
The Spartans continued searching for a breakthrough late in the match and generated three shots on goal over the final nine minutes. George Burgess-Allen forced a save in the 82nd minute before Tolu Fabamifobee put an attempt on frame in the 88th. Bennett Leitner followed with another shot on goal in the 90th minute, but Wake Forest goalkeeper Graham Syrett stopped all three opportunities to preserve the clean sheet.
Wuerslin played all 90 minutes in goal for the Spartans and finished with five saves. Reynolds led Upstate offensively with two shots, both on goal, while Burgess-Allen, Fabamifobee and Leitner each recorded one shot on frame.
Wake Forest finished the night with an 18-6 advantage in total shots and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Demon Deacons also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Upstate was especially efficient with its opportunities, putting five of its six shots on target.
With the result, USC Upstate moves to 2-4-0 on the season, while Wake Forest improves to 4-1-1.
