e Desk of Coach Mike McGuire, Head USC Upstate Baseball CoachÂ
Greetings from the USC Upstate Baseball Office! Â
I want to take a moment to introduce myself to all USC Upstate alumni and fans -- my name is Mike McGuire and I am the Head Baseball Coach at USC Upstate. A little of my background: I am originally a Gamecock, having played at USC in the early 1990’s. I got my start in coaching as a graduate assistant at Morehead State University in 1995 & 1996, and then I spent 16 years coaching in the Carolinas. I spent two different stints as an assistant coach at Winthrop University 1997 – 2002 & 2006 - 2011, and in between I was the Head Coach at Lander University from 2003-05. I also spent a year as the Head Coach at Louisburg College in 2012.Â
Immediately prior to coming the USC Upstate, I spent the last seven years (2013 – 2019) as the Head Coach at Morehead State University in Morehead, KY. Over my last five years there, we won 183 games which put us among the Top 40 programs in the country in wins over that time span. We won the Ohio Valley Conference twice during my tenure, participated in two NCAA Regionals (2015 - Louisville) and (2018 - Clemson), and we set a school record for wins in a season in 2019 with 40.
I am very excited to be the Head Coach here at USC Upstate. I took this job because I see it as an incredible opportunity. I believe we have several things here that can allow us to build a program that can compete for Big South Championships, participate in NCAA Regionals and ultimately compete nationally. I firmly believe that or I would never have accepted this job.
USC Upstate checks a lot of boxes that are extremely important when it comes to recruiting the caliber of student-athletes needed to compete for championships. We have a very pretty campus and are a good school academically, and tuition is affordable. Climate wise, we are in a great area for college baseball, and geographically it is very easy to get to with interstates running in all directions near our campus. Our facilities are very nice, well maintained and attractive to prospective student-athletes. Lastly we have good leadership as an institution and within our athleic department. They were important pieces in my decision to take this job.
I want to build a program that our Alumni, fans and supporters can be proud of, I also want to reconnect all former Rifles & Spartans with our program. I want to have more communication with you and keep you abreast of what we are doing as a program.  To help facilitate this we are establishing a Dugout Club.
The Goals of the Dugout Club are twofold:Â
1.) Creation of a Baseball Players Network to connect past players and supporters to current activities within the program. We will provide regular updates, hold in season gatherings at select home games, and other events and functions to connect our past with our present and have some fun along the way! andÂ
2.) Serve as a financial arm to the baseball program. All money raised thru the Dugout Club will go directly to the baseball program for facility and locker room needs and improvements, as well some technology needs and upgrades. These needs are all extremely important in the recruiting circuit.
Please take a moment and review the Dugout Club Brochure here. Joining the Dugout Club can positively impact future USC Upstate Baseball players and enhance our program in so many ways, and ultimately help us reach our goals of winning Big South Championships and competing in the NCAA Tournament! I hope you will consider joining.
If you have any questions or just want to talk some baseball, feel free to reach out to me. Connecting with you is very important to me. You can reach me at 864-503-5135 or MEM63@uscupstate.edu. If you have questions about the Dugout Club, you may also contact our Associate Athletic Director, Scott Netkovick, at 864-503-7367 or Netkovis@uscupstate.edu.
