Trey May is in his first season as the assistant volleyball coach.
May comes to Upstate from the Absolute Volleyball Academy of Texas where he coached two 16U travel teams since August 2020. He most recently helped lead the 16 Adidas team to a third place finish at the 2021 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship.
“I am absolutely pumped to be a part of this program! I am equally as excited to get the opportunity to work with Coach Shirley and learn from her. I love the culture she and the upperclassmen have established here at Upstate, and I can’t wait to keep building on top of it,” said Coach May.
As a student at Stephen F. Austin University, May spent the fall of 2017 as a coach and manager for the women’s club volleyball team before landing a role with the varsity team as a student assistant on the support staff for the 2018 season. That year, he helped lead the Ladyjacks to a Southland Conference Championship Title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Additionally, during his time at SFA, May established the men’s club volleyball team and served as the program’s president.
May got an early start to his coaching career when, as a senior at Kirbyville High School, he coached the Wildcats during their spring league tournament in 2017.
“I am beyond excited to add Trey May to the volleyball staff,” said Coach Shirley. “He is going to bring an energy and work ethic that is unmatched, which will undoubtedly raise the level of our program from the first day he enters the gym. Trey brings some great work experience to Upstate as well, and I look forward to working with him.”
The Kirbyville, Texas native graduated from Stephen F. Austin in August 2020 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology. He and his boyfriend, Luis Santiago, reside in Boiling Springs.
