Joey James

Joey James joins the USC Upstate men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach, bringing more than two decades of collegiate coaching, recruiting and athletic administration experience to Hub City.
James most recently served as the Director of Athletics at Harmony High School in Florida, overseeing the department’s 26 varsity sports while managing scheduling, student-athlete eligibility and personnel responsibilities.
Before moving into athletic administration, James spent six seasons as associate head coach at Florida Tech. During his tenure, he helped the Panthers reach the Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinals in 2023-24 and played a role in the development of All-SSC selections Sean Russell and Sean Houpt. James contributed to Florida Tech’s recruiting efforts, game planning and offensive and defensive strategy throughout his time in Melbourne.
James previously spent five years at Concordia University St. Paul, working closely with the program’s student-athletes both on and off the court while assisting with academics, player development and day-to-day program operations.
He began his collegiate coaching career at the University of South Dakota, spending more than a decade with the ‘Yotes as an assistant coach and interim head coach. His responsibilities included serving as recruiting coordinator, developing scouting reports and practice plans, coordinating team travel and working with the program’s booster organization and fundraising efforts.
A South Dakota graduate, James earned both his bachelor’s degree in recreation and master’s degree in athletic administration from USD.
