Shaun Vandiver joined the USC Upstate men’s basketball staff in June 2026, bringing an accomplished résumé to Hub City that includes almost 25 years of collegiate coaching experience, seven seasons as a head coach, a first-round NBA Draft selection, and induction into the University of Colorado Athletics Hall of Fame.
Vandiver comes to Spartanburg after spending the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach at Weber State. Prior to his time with the Wildcats, he spent seven seasons at the University of Wyoming, where he served as an assistant coach under Allen Edwards, Jeff Linder, and Sundance Wicks. During his tenure in Laramie, Vandiver helped guide the Cowboys to the 2022 NCAA Tournament and played a key role in developing high-level talent, including Mountain West standout Graham Ike.
His time in Laramie marked the latest chapter in a long association with the Cowboys’ program. Vandiver previously served as an assistant coach at Wyoming from 2005-10 under Steve McClain and Heath Schroyer, helping lead the program to the Mountain West Championship game in 2006. He also began his time at Wyoming as a graduate assistant during the 2002-03 season.
From 2011-18, Vandiver served as the head coach at Division II Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. During his seven seasons leading the Hornets, he guided the program to five Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament appearances and a second-round appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
In addition to his time at Wyoming and Emporia State, Vandiver has also held assistant coaching positions at Northern Colorado, Bowling Green, Boise State, and Weber State. He began his coaching career in 2001-02 as a volunteer assistant at the University of Colorado while completing his degree in sociology.
Before entering the coaching profession, Vandiver put together one of the most decorated playing careers in Colorado basketball history. After beginning his collegiate career at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, he transferred to Colorado, where he was named the Big Eight Newcomer of the Year in 1989. As a senior in 1991, he led the Buffaloes to the NIT finals while earning first-team All-Big Eight honors for the second straight season.
Vandiver averaged a double-double during his Colorado career and finished as the third-leading scorer in program history with 1,876 points over three seasons. In 2016, he was inducted into the University of Colorado Athletics Hall of Fame.
Following his collegiate career, Vandiver was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 1991 NBA Draft. He went on to enjoy a lengthy professional playing career in Europe, competing in Italy and Spain with stops in Bologna, Bilbao, Girona, Reggio Calabria, Las Palmas, and Madrid. His international playing experience also included winning the Copa del Rey in 2000 and finishing as a runner-up in the Copa Korac that same year.
A native of Bolingbrook, Illinois, Vandiver and his wife, Danielle, have five children: Aubrey, Amber, Garin, Alessandra, and Gage.
