
Spartans Shut Down by Stetson

DELAND, Fla. - After a 40-minute deadlock, Stetson flexed its muscle with two goals late in the first half and scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half to defeat USC Upstate 4-0 in an Atlantic Sun Conference match at the Stetson Soccer Complex Friday night.
Upstate falls to 3-12-0 this season, 1-8-0 in the A-Sun, while Stetson moves to 7-8-1, 5-4-0 in the A-Sun.
The Hatters broke on top in the 41st minute when midfielder Jennifer Hays rebounded a shot that hit the crossbar by midfielder Jennifer Hays and put it in the goal for a 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, in the 43rd minute, forward Tessa Gavilsky headed in another Stetson goal off of a corner kick by midfielder Julianne Turnbull to increase the lead to 2-0.
In the second half, the Hatters stayed on the offensive and forward Jessica Spencer took a long pass from Kramer and found the back of the net in the 51st minute to make it a 3-0 lead. Stetson added one more goal in the 59th minute with forward Heather Berg doing the honors to round out the scoring.
Upstate only had three shots on goal, all of them coming in the first half, and the Hatters finished the game with 24 shots, 15 of them on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Samantha Spradley made nine saves and freshman forward Charlise Cunningham had two shots to lead the Spartans.
Upstate will travel to Fort Myers, Fla., to take on Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday at 1 p.m.
