SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team returns to County University Soccer Stadium on Wednesday evening as the Spartans welcome in-state opponent South Carolina State for their final nonconference matchup of the 2026 regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the contest available to stream on ESPN+.
The Spartans enter Wednesday's matchup with a 9-2-4 overall record and a 5-0-1 mark in Big South Conference play. Upstate has put together an impressive stretch of performances, remaining unbeaten in its last six matches and carrying an undefeated 4-0-2 home record into the contest.
With just two regular-season matches remaining, Upstate will look to continue building momentum ahead of its conference finale against Gardner-Webb on October 28 and the upcoming Big South Tournament.
Last Time Out
USC Upstate is coming off a hard-fought 1-1 draw against UNC Asheville on Saturday evening in its Senior Night matchup at County University Soccer Stadium.
After a scoreless opening half, the Bulldogs broke through in the 70th minute to take a 1-0 advantage. However, the Spartans responded less than five minutes later when Jasmyn Mitchner found the back of the net in the 75th minute, bringing Upstate level and preserving its unbeaten conference record.
The goal marked Mitchner's seventh of the season, further solidifying her role as one of Upstate's most consistent offensive contributors.
Upstate controlled much of the offensive action throughout the evening, outshooting UNC Asheville 13-6 while holding a commanding 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Liana Bryant and Mitchner combined for eight shot attempts, while goalkeeper Hannah Wilt recorded two saves in 90 minutes of action.
The draw followed five consecutive conference victories, including a 1-0 road win against High Point on October 10.
Spartans by the Numbers
USC Upstate has established itself as a dangerous offensive team this season, combining consistent goal production with a disciplined defensive effort.
Through 15 matches, the Spartans have scored 32 goals, averaging 2.13 per contest, while allowing just 14 goals for an average of 0.93 per game. Upstate has also recorded 183 shots, including 95 on goal, and has held a 92-47 advantage in corner kicks over its opponents.
Senior forward Liana Bryant continues to lead the Spartans offensively, recording a team-high eight goals and five assists for 21 points. Bryant has also registered 51 shots, including 30 on goal, and has accounted for four game-winning goals this season.
Mitchner has provided another consistent scoring threat, contributing seven goals and helping power an Upstate attack that has featured contributions from throughout the lineup.
Lily MacCausland has added four goals, while Katelyn Economopoulos and Annabelle Wunderlich have each found the back of the net three times. Cansu Kara has played a key role in facilitating the Spartans' offense, leading the team with seven assists.
Defensively, Upstate has held its opponents to one goal or fewer in 10 of its 15 matches. Wilt has helped anchor the Spartans in goal, while the defensive unit has limited opponents to 70 shots on target this season.
The Spartans have also been particularly effective at home, outscoring their opponents 17-5 across six matches at County University Soccer Stadium.
Scouting South Carolina State
South Carolina State enters Wednesday's contest searching for its first victory of the 2026 campaign. The Bulldogs hold an 0-14-1 record after navigating a challenging schedule featuring several opponents from across the region.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 3-0 defeat against Charleston Southern on October 13. Earlier in October, South Carolina State fell 4-2 to Presbyterian, while its lone draw of the season came in a scoreless contest against Jacksonville on September 9.
South Carolina State has faced several opponents familiar to the Spartans this season, including Wofford, Queens, Winthrop, Presbyterian and Charleston Southern.
The Bulldogs have struggled to establish consistent offensive production, scoring five goals through their first 15 matches. They will look to challenge an Upstate defense that has surrendered fewer than one goal per match this season.
Wednesday's matchup provides the Spartans an opportunity to continue their success against in-state competition while maintaining their momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
