
Payne Named All-Tournament at BP Top of the World Classic

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - USC Upstate men's basketball standout guard Luke Payne was named to the All-Tournament team at the BP Top of the World Classic, released the tournament committee.
Payne led Upstate in scoring in two of the three tournament games this past weekend. He finished with 17 points and three rebounds to lead the Spartans to a near upset of Akron as Upstate fell 64-60 in the tournament opener Friday. Despite suffering from a deep thigh bruise suffered during the Akron game, Payne played 29 minutes Saturday against IUPUI, tallying nine points, three rebounds and two assists. In the tournament finale Sunday, the senior from Spartanburg scored a team-high 17 points, grabbed three boards and dished out two assists against Oregon State.
Payne finished the weekend with 43 points, nine rebounds and five assists. He averaged 14.3 points and three rebounds per game for the tournament.
In addition to Payne, Upstate head athletic trainer Michael "Sandy" Sandago was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Trainer.
Upstate returns to the hardwood Saturday night at 7:00 against UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C.
