Spartanburg, S.C. - A week after former USC Upstate men's golfer Ian Schneider turned pro, he made the cut and finished 42nd in his second professional tournament at the Warrior Classic played at the Warrior Golf Club in Concord, N.C., June 19-21.
Schneider, from Charlotte, helped lead Upstate to a second-place finish by one stroke at the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championships in May. After returning home, he and fellow Spartan Josh Gallman teamed to take the medalist honors in the stroke play portion of the South Carolina Golf Association Four Ball Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals in the match play. Schneider turned pro after the event.
Schneider opened the Warrior Classic with a 3-under-par 68 on the 6,609-yard, par 71 course. He carded a 1-over 72 in the second round to make the cut in his second professional tournament. He finished with a 2-over 73 Thursday to finish the tournament at even par 213 and in 42nd place. He earned $500 for his 42nd-place finish. Matt Cannon defeated William McGirt in a playoff to win the tournament. Cannon and McGirt finished the 54-hole event at 18-under par. Schneider was one of 45 individuals to make the cut out of 115 that started the tournament.
Schneider spent one season at Upstate after transferring from South Carolina. He was a member of the Gamecocks golf team for four years. After red-shirting his freshman season, he saw significant action as a sophomore. He graduated with honors and had one year of eligibility remaining when he transferred to Upstate as a graduate student. He finished the 2006-07 season with a 75.7 stroke average and three Top 10 individual finishes in 12 tournament. He helped lead Upstate to the program's first ever team tournament title last September, its second straight appearance in the NCAA Regionals, and the runner-up for the national championship in just the program's second year of existence after a 14-year hiatus from competition at the University.
