CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Jack Roux (Punta Arenas, Chile/Subercaseaux) won both his qualifying matches to advance to the main draw at the ITA Mideast Regionals at Duke University. In the process, Roux became the 14th player in school history, and the third this season, to reach 40 career singles wins with the USC Upstate men's tennis program.
Roux, a 5-6 Chilean, also nearly advanced to the main draw in doubles with partner Leandro Osorio (Quillota, Chile/Subercaseaux), as the pair split their matches in the afternoon.
In singles play, Roux notched a 6-4, 6-2 win against Callum Gee of Davidson to open the tournament. He followed that with his 40th career singles win, coming back in dramatic style to defeat the College of Charleston's Michael Boyer, 7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (5). After winning a hard-fought first set, Roux dropped six matches in a row in the second. His start in the third set was also auspicious, as he fell down 5-3 before winning three of the next four games to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, he fell behind, 5-2, but came back with five straight points to earn his way into the main draw.
With Osorio and playing less than an hour after his singles match ended, Roux was able to help beat Coastal Carolina's John Hairston and Joseph Withers, 8-1. In the second round, however, Osorio and Roux fell to Duke's David Holland and Jared Pinsky.
The main draw begins on Friday at the University of North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center with both Roux and junior Javier Tori (Lima, Peru/Markham College) in the singles draw and the doubles pair of Tori and junior Renzo Airaldi (Lima, Peru/Domingo Faustino Sarmiento) set to begin play.
