FARMVILLE, Va. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Longwood on Sunday afternoon at the Lancers Tennis Courts.
"Guys played with great energy and intensity today," USC Upstate head tennis coach Tim McLane said. "It was a pretty crazy match and the guys faced a lot of adversity, and at times it felt we were playing more than one opponent, but we just kept fighting. We didn't play our best tennis, by any means, but our head and our willingness to compete kept them in the match. We'll have a couple days off for spring break then jump right back into conference play after a few good training sessions."
USC Upstate got off to a bit of a slow start in doubles action on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans top doubles team of Leon Roider and Frederick Sydow fell 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team of Guilherme Diniz and Luka Eble faltered against Longwood allowing the Lancers to take the opening point of the match.
In singles action the Spartans battled throughout the match. At the No. 1 singles flight Roider fell in the opening set 6-4, but he fought till the end of the second and came up just short in a 7-6 loss. At the No.2 singles flight Fernando Bernardes fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to give Longwood a 3-0 advantage. Eble fought all the way and fell in two close sets 7-6 and 7-5.
Diniz picked up the Spartans first point of the match at the No. 4 singles position. Diniz picked up a straight sets victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Tom Russwurm fell at the No. 5 singles flight in straight sets and Sydow fell at the No. 6 slot. Sydow came close in both sets, falling by a final score of 7-6.
