
Spartans Take Six Of First 11 Matches At Wofford Fall Challenge

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate men's tennis team started off the Wofford Fall Challenge by claiming six of the first 10 matches, all against Wofford, on Friday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Complex. The Wofford Fall Challenge is laid out in a team vs. team round robin format, with no team scoring being kept.
Wofford claimed two of the three doubles matches with only the team of senior Leandro Osorio (Quillota, Chile/Subercaseaux) and sophomore Nico Ospina (Bogota, Colombia/S.E. de Manizales) claiming an 8-6 win over the Wofford pair of Paul Bartholomy and Scott Collins.
In singles play, the Spartans won four of the six full matches and sophomore Ignacio Velez (Bogota, Colombia/Cowley College) split his two one-set matches, beating Ryan Byrne, 6-3. Junior Jack Roux (Punta Arenas, Chile/Subercaseaux) downed Danny Manlow in a tough three-set match, 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 and junior Javier Tori (Lima, Peru/Markham College) downed Paul Bartholomy, 7-6, 6-4. Junior Arnaldo Lovera (Caracas, Venezuela) beat Stuart Robertson, 6-2, 6-4 and Ospina added a three-set win over Alan Donald, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday at the Reeves Tennis Complex to wrap up their portion of the Wofford Fall Challenge, facing Appalachian State and Presbyterian.
