
Gallman Shoots 69 In Third Round Of 102nd Southern Amateur Championship

Orlando, Fla. USC Upstate standout men's golfer Josh Gallman fired a 69 in the third round of the 102nd Southern Amateur Championship Friday, and is the sixth-best player in the clubhouse when play was suspended. With more than half of the golfers yet to complete their round, the third round will resume Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. with the final round starting immediately at the conclusion of round three.
Gallman entered the third round at 1-under-par and in a tie for 37th in the field. However, the Gaffney, S.C., native turned in his second 69 of the tournament to get into contention for a top-10 finish in the prestigious tournament being held at the 7,165-yard, par-72 Lake Nona Golf and Country Club. Of the players who finished their third round, Gallman is sixth. His 4-under total is tied for 23rd overall with players left to complete their third round.
The tournament boasts an illustrious list of former champions including Ben Crenshaw, Justin Leonard, Lanny Wadkins, Bob Tway, Tim Simpson, Hubert Green, Len Mattiace, Steve Lowery, Mark Brooks, Lee Rinker and Chris Patton. The winner of the tournament receives an invitation to the PGA Tour's Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.
Gallman started the round on hole No. 10 and got off to a slow start by bogeying the hole to fall to even par for the tournament. However, he immediately rebounded to birdie the 582-yard, par-5 11th hole. After two straight pars, he birdied the 345-yard, par-4 14th to get to 1-under for the day and 2-under for the tournament. He made par on the final four holes to go out in 35. After making the turn, he made four straight pars before making birdie on the 359-yard, par-4 fifth hole, his 14th of the day. He also birdied the 534-yard, par-5 ninth, his last, to come in with a 2-under 34 and a 69 for the round.
Blake Trimble turned in a strong 8-under 64 Friday to take a two stroke lead into the clubhouse at 12-under-par. Five players, four of which did not complete their third round, are at 10-under, while seven players who have not completed their third round are at 9-under for the tournament.
Gallman is one of two players from South Carolina to make the cut in the tournament. At 4-under for the tournament, he leads fellow South Carolinian George Bryan of Chapin by a stroke. In all, six players from the Palmetto state qualified the tournament.
Gallman led the Upstate men's golf team in its first season in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference. He won four individual titles and led the Spartans to two team championships in 12 tournaments last year. He was named the A-Sun Golfer of the Month three of the six times it was awarded in 2007-08 and was an all-conference selection.
