SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Junior Javier Tori (Lima, Peru/Markham College) posted wins in both singles and doubles play on the opening day of the prestigious Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex, but fell in the round of 32 in doubles play late on Friday night.
Tori, playing in the Division II singles bracket, started his afternoon with an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win over Central Florida's Brock Sakey to advance to the second round of singles play, where he will face Jacksonville's Jamie Esteban on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. This is the second straight year that Tori has won his opening-round match at the event, one of the largest collegiate tennis tournaments in the nation.
In doubles play, Tori and junior partner Renzo Airaldi (Lima, Peru/Domingo Faustino Sarmiento) fought the Georgia Tech pair of Miguel Muguruza and Doug Kenny in the first round of the Division I doubles bracket, taking an 8-6 win. In the second round, however the pair faced Duke's fifth-seeded Dylan Arnould and Torsten Wietoska, falling 8-6.
Junior Jack Roux (Punta Arenas, Chile/Subercaseaux) fell in his opening Division II singles match as Alain Michel from Duke took a slim 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) decision. Airaldi fell in his opening Division I singles match to 50th-ranked Lucas Joviata of South Florida, 6-2, 6-2.
Tori, who is facing a Dolphin junior, will have another match at 4:30 p.m. if he beats Esteban. He would face the winner of a match between Duke's Luke Marchese and ETSU's Sergio Velez.
