Sunset Beach, N.C. - USC Upstate turned in a third straight consistent round, but watched as most of the field went low Sunday as the Spartans finished ninth out of 18 teams in the Sea Trail Intercollegiate on the Jones Course at the Sea Trail Resort.
Upstate followed first and second round efforts of 298 and 295 with a 297 Sunday to finish with an 890 total to finish ninth. While the effort was solid, the Spartans fell six spots from third prior to the round to ninth for the tournament. Murray State won the tournament with a dominant 4-over 868 total. Guilford finished second with an 878 total.
Belmont Abbey and Elon finished in a tie for third in the tournament, totaling 880 for 54 holes. They were followed in the top-10 by James Madison (885), Wofford (886), Tennessee Tech (887), Appalachian State (888), Upstate (890) and Stetson (892).
Baxter Culler turned in his second 2-under 70 of the tournament to vault up the scoreboard and finished in a tie for 11th. He finished with a 1-over-par 217 for the tournament, turning in rounds of 70, 77 and 70.
Tyler Tucker had an impressive tournament as well, claiming a top-20 finish after shooting a second straight 73 to finish one stroke back of Culler at 218 and in a tie for 16th. Tucker was solidly consistent, turning in rounds of 72, 73 and 73 for the Spartans.
Michael Lawrence shot a 75 Sunday to finish in a tie for 43rd with a 225 total. Bryan Otis shot a 79 Sunday and Jamie Lightsey added an 81 as both finished with 235 totals to finish in a tie for 78th. One name missing from the Upstate results was standout junior Josh Gallman. Gallman committed to participating in a wedding of a close friend prior to the golf schedule being finalized earlier this summer and missed the tournament. He won the individual championship at last year's Sea Trail Intercollegiate, his first of four on the year.
Elon's Steve Dressel shot his second 69 of the tournament to win the individual championship with a 4-under 212 total. Tennessee Tech's Greyson Painter and Murray State's Hunter Ford finished second at 2-under.
