SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate posted a goal in the 59th minute, however it was not enough as Campbell defeated the Spartans by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night at County University Soccer Stadium. With the win, Campbell improves to 9-6-0 overall and now owns a 4-2 mark in Atlantic Sun play. Meanwhile Upstate falls to 0-14-0 on the year and 0-5-0 in league play.
Campbell got on the board first when Kirsty Meyer scored her second goal of the season. Meyer's goal from the left side of the box came after a corner kick by Marisa Muller. The 1-0 advantage the Camels owned remained 1-0 as the two teams broke for intermission.
Upstate tied the match at 1-1 when Alyssa Roegner scored off of a rebound. The previous shot by the Spartans came from Dior McGruder who nearly scored after Camel goal keeper Jamie Panfil misplayed the ball off of the cross bar.
The goal by Roegner was the first of the season and fifth of her career. Of the five goals the Shelby Township, Mich. native has scored, two have come against the Camels.
The score remained knotted at one a piece until Marisa Muller scored after the ball got away from Upstate keeper Brittany Daughtry. Muller was assisted on her fourth goal of the season by Olga Ekblom.
Upstate managed to outshoot Campbell, owning a 13-10 advantage. However, the Camels owned a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Campbell also owned the advantage in corner kicks with a margin of 8-5.
Two yellow cards were awarded in the match, both coming in the second half. The first came in the 49th-minute and was awarded to CU head coach Todd Clark. The second card came in the 74th-minute and was given to CU's Tove Nordlander.
Upstate tried furiously in the final minutes of the game to push the tempo in an effort to tie the match and send it to overtime. However they managed just one shot over the final few minutes as Campbell escaped with a 2-1 victory.
Upstate will hit the road on Monday as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to face the ETSU Bucs. That match is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
