
Rodriguez Advances At Wilson/ITA Carolina Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Edgar Rodriguez advanced to the second round at the Wilson/ITA Carolina Regionals, as he became the first USC Upstate men's tennis player in the Division I era to advance in the main draw in ITA Regional competition, highlighting the first day of regional play for the Spartans at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at the University of North Carolina on Friday.
Rodriguez, who entered the tournament as the No. 13 seed, downed Carlos Arboleda-Garcia of Elon, 6-2, 6-1, and will advance to the second round where he will face Wake Forest's Conner Sherwood. The winner of the 8:30 a.m. match will face the winner of a match between Davidson's Joe Schafer and UNC Asheville's Adrien Langeard at 12:30 p.m.
In doubles play, seniors Renzo Airaldi and Javier Tori beat UNC Greensboro's William John and Timion Meijs, 8-4, on Thursday night, but fell in the second round to the No. 9-seed David Hopkins and Carlos Salmon, 9-8 (1). Senior Jack Roux and Rodriguez, awarded the No. 7-seed, were given a first-round bye before falling in the second round to Appalachian State's Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs.
Tori fell in his opening round match to Wake Forest's Danny Kreyman, 6-3, 6-1, and Roux fell to 17th-seed Jose Hernandez of North Carolina, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Airaldi also fell to North Carolina's Andrew Crone in a tight back-and-forth match, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4.
