CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Edgar Rodriguez advanced to the third round at the Wilson/ITA Carolina Regionals on Saturday morning by beating Wake Forest's Conner Sherwood in three sets, but he fell narrowly in a third-set tiebreaker to Joe Schafer of Davidson to wrap up the USC Upstate men's tennis team's run at the tournament.
The No. 13 seed, Rodriguez had to come back from a set down, but played solidly in the second round to post a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Wake Forest's Conner Sherwood to advance to the third round. In the third round, Rodriguez staged a late comeback after falling behind, 5-2, in the third set, but couldn't complete the comeback, as Schafer took the 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (4) win.
In the first round on Friday, the Colombian downed Carlos Arboleda-Garcia of Elon, 6-2, 6-1, becoming the first player in Upstate's D-I era to win a match in the main draw at the ITA Regionals.
For the second straight year, the Spartans will open their spring dual match season by heading to Georgia Tech, where they will face the Yellow Jackets on Jan. 17, 2010.
