Kill Devil Hill, N.C. - USC Upstate golfer Josh Gallman posted a 1-under-par 69 in the final round of the ODU/Seascape Intercollegiate Tuesday, finishing fifth for his fourth-straight top 10 finish to begin the season and lead the Spartans to a sixth-place finish in the tournament.
Gallman's 69 was the lowest posted by Upstate, but all of the Spartans were solid on the day and put up a 285 to move from eighth to sixth in the final standings. The 285 was 25 shots better than the score the Spartans posted in Monday's opening round, though the playing conditions were much better Tuesday than on Monday. It also marked the first time this season that Upstate lowered its score in the final round. Upstate threw out a 76 and took scores of 69, 70, 73 and 73. Upstate finished with a 36-hole total of 595 to finish a shot ahead of Radford and four strokes in front of Hartford and Towson.
"It was so important for us to be able to turn in a final round like this," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "It gives the guys a lot of confidence. It was just a great team round and something for us to build on."
Old Dominion, the host of the tournament at the Seascape Golf Resort, won the tournament with a 584 total, besting George Washington (588) by four shots. Penn was third at 589 and was followed by George Mason (592), Longwood (593), Upstate (595), Radford (596), Hartford (599), Towson (599), Delaware (607), Temple (611), Elon (612), Drexel (616) and St. Joseph's (643).
Gallman had a solid tournament and finished fourth among all competitors with seven birdies in the event. He also finished fifth in par-5 scoring. It all added up to his fourth top 10 finish in four tournaments and his third top five effort this season. He now has a school record 16 top five finishes in his career.
"You can't say enough about Josh," said Lawton. "Yet another top five finish. His 69 was a round that could have been lower. He missed some 12-18 foot birdie putts, but still had a really solid round."
In addition to Gallman, Spartan Michael Lawrence claimed a top 15 finish after shooting 73 Tuesday for a 148 total. It was the 13th top 15 finish of his career and the first of the season.
Brian Horton had a tremendous turnaround from his first round to the second. He opened the tournament with an 86 in brutal conditions Monday, but rallied for an even-par 70 to finish at 156 and in a tie for 49th.
"You can't say enough about what Brian did this morning," said Lawton. "He went out and played so well throughout the round. I was so proud of him. He finally looked like the Brian Horton I have seen play in practice. It was nice to see him post a good score being the first one off the tee. It never hurts when the first score in the round is a 70."
Horton tied teammate McKenzie Oref who finished with a 76 Tuesday. Tyler Comer was the third-lowest Spartan in the tournament with a 153 total after finishing with a 73 Tuesday and lowering his score by seven shots over his opening round.
Old Dominion's Eric Onesi led from start to finish and posted his second straight round in the 60's to take the individual title. He followed a 69 from Monday with a 67 on Tuesday to finish at 4-under-par for the tournament. He won by two strokes over Hartford's Nick McDonald.
