
Upstate Wins Fifth Straight, Downs Defending MEAC Champions, S.C. State, 5-2

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - A hard-fought doubles point and two straight set singles wins helped pace the USC Upstate men's tennis team to a 5-2 win over defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions, S.C. State, on Sunday. The Spartans improve to 7-2 overall and have won five straight matches while S.C. State falls to 3-3.
The Spartans won the first two doubles matches to take the points as junior Jack Roux and freshman Edgar Rodriguez posted an 8-2 win oer David Grund and Jan Langer at No. 3 doubles and juniors Renzo Airaldi and Javier Tori added an 8-4 win over Ivan Milvojevic and Tamas Dobrotka at No. 2 doubles.
Airaldi kept the momentum going, as he notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Radek Pivonka and Rodriguez gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Milvojevic at No. 1. After a Bulldogs win at No. 3 singles, Roux took a three-set win from Dobrotka, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, to clinch the match. The two other 3-set matches were decided by super-set tiebreakers, with the Spartans splitting the pair, as freshman Ramiro Blanco defeated David Grund, 6-0, 6-7 (8), 18-16.
Upstate gets back to action on Thursday when it hosts crosstown rival Wofford at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex in a 3 p.m. match.
