NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After playing six three-set games on Saturday, the USC Upstate men's tennis team won three matches in straight sets on Sunday afternoon against Georgetown, lifting the team to a 5-1 win at Yale University's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. Upstate wrapped up its play at the Yale University four-way with a 2-1 record, falling to Yale, 5-2, and beating Stony Brook, 6-0, on Saturday.
The Spartans (4-2 overall) got out to a quick start against the Hoyas (0-4 overall), with junior Renzo Airaldi posting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ned Samuelson at No. 1, freshman Ramiro Blanco taking a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Michael Clarke at No. 5 and senior Leandro Osorio posting a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Kenneth Wong at No. 6.
The Hoyas closed the gap to 3-1 on a win at No. 2 singles, but junior Arnaldo Lovera clinched the win with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win, his second three-set win in as many days, over Adam Gross at No. 4. Junior Javier Tori closed the match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Andrew Bruhn at No. 3 singles.
With Lovera's win, he moved past current Upstate student assistant, Sandy Franz, into ninth in school history with 45 career singles wins. Tori's win was the 90th combined of his career, becoming the eighth in school history to reach the mark.
The win was Upstate head coach Alessandro De Marzo's 70th career win in his fifth year at the school. He is just the second coach in school history to reach the mark, along with Alan Ferguson (1988-97), who won 119 matches in 10 years at the helm.
Upstate gets back on the courts on Saturday when it travels to Davidson for a 10 a.m. match against the Southern Conference school that posted a 4-3 win over Upstate in 2008.
