95th Carolinas Amateur Championship Bracket
Charleston, S.C. - Standout USC Upstate golfer and Gaffney, S.C., native Josh Gallman faced a familiar foe in the semifinals of the 95th Carolinas Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Charleston Saturday afternoon. In the end, a dominant Gallman claimed a 4 & 2 victory over defending champion and No. 1 seed Ben Kohles Saturday afternoon to claim a spot in the championship match Sunday morning.
Gallman advanced to the quarterfinal round of last year's Carolinas Amateur, but Kohles, who plays college golf at Virginia, claimed a 2 & 1 win in the match and went on to take the championship. Gallman looked for revenge Saturday, this time in the semifinals. And revenge he would get, taking a 4 & 2 victory in the semifinals to move into the championship match. He will face Jack Fields from Southern Pines, N.C. Sunday at 8:00 am.
Fields is the 15th seed in the tournament, but has navigated his way through the bracket with solid play. He claimed a pair of 1-up wins in his first two matches, defeating Billy West in the first round before downing the tournament's No. 2 seed, Uly Grisett, in the Round of 16. He moved into the quarterfinals and claimed a 2-up win over Bryan Newton to move into the semifinals. In the semis, Fields claimed a 3 & 2 win over Steven Brame to earn a spot in the championship against Gallman.
Gallman advanced to the semifinals after taking a strong 3 & 2 victory over Greensboro, N.C.'s, Thomas Bullock Saturday morning. Gallman had claimed a 2 & 1 victory over Jayson Judy in Friday's first match. He then claimed a 3 & 2 win over Paul Woodbury in the Round of 16 to setup a matchup with Bullock. Gallman was never really tested on the back nine in the match with Bullock and ended the contest after 16 holes, his second straight 3 & 2 victory of the tournament.
Gallman is a rising senior at Upstate and has been a mainstay at the top of the Spartans lineup throughout his career. He broke onto the collegiate scene at the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championships, firing a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to help lead Upstate to a second-place finish by just one stroke. An honorable mention All-American as a freshman, he led the Spartans into Division I competition as a sophomore in 2007-08, finishing with four individual tournament titles while earning A-Sun All-Conference honors. He again claimed All-ASun honors this year after ranking in the top 4 in stroke average in the league throughout the year.
