Cordova, Tenn. - USC Upstate standout golfer Josh Gallman turned in a 1-under-par 71 in the first round of the prestigious Southern Amateur Wednesday at Colonial Country Club just outside of Memphis, Tenn., finishing the first round five strokes back of the lead heading into the second round.
Gallman, from Gaffney, S.C., and a senior at Upstate, made par on the first six holes of the round before recording a birdie and a bogey on the final three holes of the front nine to go out in even par 36. He birdied the 10th hole, a 425-yard, par-4 before recording bogey on the 11th hole. He finished the round with back-to-back birdies to finish the round at 1-under 71 and stands tied for 43rd heading into Thursday's second round.
Gallman is making his second appearance in the Southern Amateur after finishing tied for 24th last year in the championship. He has been a mainstay in the lineup for Upstate since his freshman season, not only leading Upstate to a second-place finish in the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championships, but also leading Upstate into NCAA Division I competition in 2007-08 with four individual tournament titles.
Three players turned in 6-under-par 66's Wednesday to vault to the top of the leaderboard. Micheal Green, Jonathan Hahn and Jan Todd each turned in 66 to share the lead heading into the second round Thursday. Gallman will tee off Thursday at 8:10 am hoping to make the cut for the weekend.
The Southern Amateur will crown its 103rd champion this week as one of the top amateur championships in the country. Bobby Jones, Ben Crenshaw and Justin Leonard are just three of the many golfing greats who have won the championship in the storied history of the tournament.
