Cordova, Tenn. - USC Upstate standout golfer and Gaffney, S.C., native Josh Gallman made his move at the Southern Amateur Friday afternoon at Colonial Country Club. He was 5-under on his back nine and finished with a 3-under 69 to move up the leaderboard at the midway point of the tournament.
Play did not get underway until the afternoon due to heavy rains that pelted the course Thursday morning. Only half of the field was able to play Thursday with the afternoon tee times scheduled to play their second round Friday morning. The cut will then be made and the third round will take place Friday afternoon.
Gallman began the day tied for 43rd after firing a 1-under 71 Wednesday. After going on a tear on the back nine, he moved up 27 spots and is now tied for 16th heading into Friday's round at 4-under. The cutline is even-par 144.
Gallman started the round on hole No. 10. After opening the round with six-straight pars, he took double bogey on the par-5 16th and went out in 2-over 38. He put the front nine behind him and birdied two of the first three holes on the back nine. He also birdied his 14th, 16th and 18th holes to shoot 31 on his back nine and finished the day with a 69.
Mark Silvers finished with a 66 to take the tournament lead at 10-under. Jonathan Khan is one stroke behind at 9-under, while four players are at 7-under.
Gallman has been the catalyst for the Upstate golf team since stepping on campus as a freshman in 2006. He led the Spartans to a second-place finish in the NCAA Division II National Championships in 2007, led Upstate into NCAA Division I play with four individual titles as a sophomore in 2007-08, and earned his second All-Asun honor as a junior last season.
