Blythewood, S.C. - USC Upstate golfer Josh Gallman turned in a solid 2-under-par 69 in the second and final round of the sectional qualifying tournament for the 2009 U.S. Amateur, but the senior from Gaffney, S.C., fell three strokes short of earning a spot into the field, finishing at 2-under for the tournament. Teammate Tyler Comer, from Pacolet Mills, S.C., also failed to qualify for the championship.
Gallman's 69 was good enough to post a solid 140 total for the 36-hole event. However, five players and two alternates were able to finish ahead of him for a spot in the U.S. Amateur. Corey Nagy (134), Phillip Mollica (134), Davis Lee (135), Brian Harmon (136) and Michael Green (137) all earned a spot in the championship to be played Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hill Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Christopher Marsh (138) and Harris English (139) earned alternate spots. Comer finished the tournament with a 150 total.
Gallman and Comer will join four other Spartans in next week's South Carolina Amateur Championship to close out the summer of amateur golf. Joining the duo in the tournament from Upstate will be Michael Lawrence, McKenzie Oref and former Spartans Baxter Culler and Jamie Lightsey. The 2009 S.C. Amateur will be played Aug. 6-9 at Berkeley Hall Plantation in Bluffton.
