
Unattached Spartans Do Well In First Day At Upstate Fall Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Renzo Airaldi, playing unattached, reached the semifinals in the `B' singles and the quarterfinals of the `A' doubles bracket before darkness forced an end to the first day of the Upstate Fall Tournament at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex on Friday.
Airaldi, one of four Spartans playing in the event unattached, posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Presbyterian's Ivan Ho and a 6-4, 6-1 win over USC Aiken's Michael Guglielmeti to reach the semifinals, where he will face Clemson's Kevin Galloway on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Two unattached duos made up of Spartan student-athletes also had a good evening in doubles play as senior Jack Roux and Edgar Rodriguez posted an 8-0 win over Ben Klaas and Guglielmeti to reach the semifinals of the `A' bracket, where they will face Wofford's Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy.
Airaldi and senior partner Javier Tori notched an 8-2 win over Ho and Zach Sprouse to reach the quarterfinals where they will face Wofford's Stuart Robertson and Tinus Van Wyk.
In the `A' bracket, Roux, Tori and Rodriguez all posted first-round wins before falling in the quarterfinals, which will feature three Clemson players in the semifinals.
The Spartans wrap up the Upstate Fall Tournament on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Upstate Tennis Complex.
