SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Perhaps fittingly, the unattached members of the USC Upstate men's tennis team at the USC Upstate Fall Tournament decided to double default in the `A' flight doubles finals. After all, the pair of Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi were set to face off against teammates Edgar Rodriguez and Jack Roux.
Tori and Airaldi posted an 8-2 win over Wofford's Stuart Robertson and Tinus Van Wyk in the quarterfinals this afternoon before beating the Clemson duo of Kevin Galloway and Robert Pietrucha, 8-4, in the semifinals to reach the finals.
Roux and Rodriguez had an easier road to the finals, as they had reached the semifinals on Friday night and the pair were able to down Wofford's Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy, 8-3, on Saturday to reach the end of the bracket.
The lone unattached Spartan left in singles play on Saturday was Airaldi, who fell in the semifinals of the `B' flight to Clemson's Galloway, 6-3, 6-2. Galloway went on to win the `B' singles flight.
In other action, Derek DiFazio won the `A' singles flight with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Furman's Sawyer Duncan. Wofford's Michael Schecter took the `C' singles draw and Furman's Sawyer Duncan and Tyler Snook earned the `B' doubles flight title.
The Spartans will next head to Athens, Ga., for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the University of Georgia. The tournament begins on Friday.
