ATHENS, Ga. - Rain forced most of the USC Upstate men's tennis team's first-day matches at the 42nd annual Southern Intercollegiates to Saturday with only three of Upstate's planned six first-round matches in action on Friday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Sophomore Edgar Rodriguez notched a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over Mercer's Fernando Armendaris in the Division I singles bracket, as he will move on to face the winner of a match between South Alabama's No. 16 seed Romain Bocaert and Georgia Tech's Elliot Potvin in the round of 32. Also in Division I singles, senior Javier Tori fell to Vanderbilt's Alex DiValerio, 6-1, 6-4.
Playing in the Division I doubles bracket, Tori and senior Renzo Airaldi ran into a tough first round foe in form of fifth-seeded Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha of Duke, falling 8-3.
Upstate will still have several players in action on Saturday as three singles entries are still alive along with one doubles team. In Division II singles, senior Jack Roux will face No. 8-seed Georgia Tech's Dusan Miljevic and Airaldi will face Coastal Carolina's Alex Funkhouser.
In Division II doubles, Roux and Rodriguez will face the winner of a match between Tennessee's Matt Brewer and Taylor Patrick and South Alabama's Romain Bocaert and Lucas Viel.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday with play starting at the Magill Complex at 8 a.m.
