ATHENS, Ga. - The USC Upstate men's tennis team endured another rainy day at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Saturday, with only three Upstate matches getting underway at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility. Senior Renzo Airaldi highlighted the action for the Spartans, posting a super tiebreaker win in the Division II singles bracket to move to the Round of 32.
Senior Renzo Airaldi faced Alex Funkhouser of Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Division II bracket, dropping the first set, 6-4, before storming back with a 6-1 second set. In the extra set tiebreaker, Airaldi barely let any drama into it, winning 10-4 to move on to the round of 32. He goes on to face Georgia Tech's Miguel Muguruza.
This is the second time in Airaldi's career that he has advanced to the round of 32 at the Southern Intercollegiates, posting two wins in the 2007 Division II bracket to reach the round of 32.
In Division II doubles, Roux and Rodriguez fell to South Alabama's Romain Bocaert and Lucas Viel, 8-4. Senior Jack Roux fell to No. 8-seed Georgia Tech's Dusan Miljevic, 6-4, 6-4, in the Division II singles first round.
Sophomore Edgar Rodriguez, who notched a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over Mercer's Fernando Armendaris in the Division I singles bracket on Friday, saw his match with South Alabama's No. 16 seed Romain Bocaert moved to Sunday due to the weather.
Upstate will continue their run at the Southern Intercollegiates on Sunday, with play starting at the Magill Complex at 7:50 a.m.
