ATHENS, Ga. - With rain still forcing all of the matches into the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the USC Upstate men's tennis team wrapped up its run at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday.
In Division I singles, sophomore Edgar Rodriguez fell in the round of 32 to Georgia Tech's Elliot Potvin, 6-3, 6-4. Rodriguez won his opening match over Mercer's Fernando Armendaris, 6-1, 6-3, on Friday.
In Division II singles, senior Renzo Airaldi was forced to retire after falling behind Georgia Tech's Miguel Muguruza, 6-3, 2-0. Airaldi downed Coastal Carolina's Alex Funkhouser, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6) in the first round of the tournament to become the second Spartan to reach the round of 32 twice in a career.
Upstate will get back on the courts on Monday night for the Alumni match, with the four current Spartans, Airaldi, Rodriguez and seniors Javier Tori and Jack Roux, facing off against a mix of the coaching staff and former Spartans in current head coach Alessandro De Marzo and assistant coach Julio Peralta and 2008 All-A-Sun performer Sandy Franz and 2003 D-II All-American Jose Luis Reyes. The match is set to begin, weather permitting, at 7:30 p.m. at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
