Corvallis, Ore. - USC Upstate standout golfer Josh Gallman turned in a pair of standout rounds, going out with a 2-under-par 70 in the first round and following with a 4-under 68 in the second, and stands tied for third after the first day of the Giustina Memorial Classic hosted by Oregon State at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
Galllman will enter Tuesday's final round just two strokes out of the lead held by Washington State's Trent Sanders. Gallman is aiming for his third straight top 10 finish of the season after winning the season-opening tournament at the Rutgers Invitational and finishing tied for ninth at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate.
Gallman was simply outstanding on the day, improving his score in the second round. After opening the day with a 70, the senior from Gaffney, S.C., shot the lowest second round score with a 68 to move into position to challenge for the tournament championship. He stands 6-under-par for the tournament and finished the day with nine birdies and tied for second in the tournament in par-4 scoring at 5-under.
In addition to Gallman, fellow senior Michael Lawrence was simply solid on the day, turning in back-to-back even-par scores of 72 for a 144 total through 36 holes. He is tied for 15th in the tournament standings.
Paced by Gallman and Lawrence, Upstate turned in rounds of 294 and 297 for a 591 total. The Spartans will enter the final round in sixth place in the 10-team field, trailing Cal Poly in fifth place by five strokes. Washington State leads the tournament after rounds of 277 (-11) and 284 for a 561 total. Oregon State is second with a 565 total and is followed by Oregon (569), Nevada (572), Cal Poly (586), Upstate (591), Boise State (592), Portland (593), Wyoming (300) and Hawai'i (6-7).
Brian Horton had a solid day, turning in rounds of 74 and 78 to help the Spartan cause. His 152 total stands tied for 34th in the individual standings. McKenzie Oref and Tyler Comer are tied for 47th after each totaling 158 on the day. Oref turned in rounds of 78 and 80, while Comer shot a pair of 79's.
Washington State opened the tournament with an 11-under-par 277 to take the lead. Oregon shot a 280 to stand second heading into the second round and was followed by Oregon State (282), Nevada (283), Cal Poly (285), Boise State (291), Upstate (294), Portland (294), Wyoming (294) and Hawai'i (301).
The first day of the tournament was played in a unique format with the men and women playing in the same groupings. Teams were paired with two men and two women from each school playing in a foursome. For example, the No. 1 player for the Upstate men's and women's teams were paired together with the No. 1 men's and women's players from Hawai'i.
