No. 72 Spartans Fall At No. 43 Georgia Tech, 6-1

ATLANTA, Ga. - The USC Upstate men's tennis team opened its 2010 season on Sunday morning, falling at No. 43 Georgia Tech, 6-1. The No. 72 Spartans were able to win the doubles point, but the team struggled during the singles matches, falling in two three-set affairs.
The Spartans (0-1 overall) got out to a good start by coming from behind to take the doubles point against the Yellow Jackets (2-0 overall). After a loss at No. 2 doubles, Upstate stormed back as sophomores Edgar Rodriguez and Ramiro Blanco tied the point at one with a 9-8 (7-1) win over Dusan Miljevic and Ryan Smith at No. 3 and junior Marco Linconir and senior Jack Roux won their first match together, 9-8, over Eliot Potvin and Dean O'Brien at No. 1 doubles to secure the point.
In singles play, the Spartans stayed played in several tough sets, as both senior Renzo Airaldi at No. 1 and Linconir at No. 4 singles lost a set, 7-5, and Roux lost a set, 7-6, at No. 5, but each fell in two sets. At No. 2 singles, Rodriguez fell to Eliot Potvin in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and to wrap up the match, Blanco lost his first career singles match in a superset tiebreak to Ryan Smith, 1-6, 7-6, 12-10.
The Spartans get back on the court next Sunday when they travel to seventh-ranked Georgia for a 1 p.m. match.
