Horton Tied For 10th At Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate

Pooler, Ga. – USC Upstate men's golfer and Boiling Springs native Brian Horton followed a solid opening round 73 by going low with a 4-under-par 68 in the second and is tied for 10th place at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate Monday at Savannah Quarters Country Club.
Horton, a sophomore, carded a 73 in the morning round, and shot 68 to vault into a tie for 10th as the low Spartan in the tournament. He sits at 3-under with a 141 total heading into Tuesday's final round.
Horton was not the only Spartan who went low in the second round Monday afternoon. Gaffney's Matthew Hopper also shot a 68, shaving off 10 strokes from his first round. The pair helped lead Upstate to an even par 288 in the second round. The Spartans stand 10th in the strong 14-team field.
"I'm excited that Brian is in the top 10," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "He played very well today and should be proud of his return to the lineup. Matthew recovered nicely from the morning and his afternoon 68 was a career low. Unfortunately, depth continues to hurt us. Our 4-5 scores are just not helping the team score. We lack consistency. We have had four different players score in the 60's this fall through three events, so that's a positive sign.
"The conditions of the course were excellent and the weather was great for golf. Tomorrow is an opportunity to put it all together. A move up the leaderboard is out there for us to make."
Florida Gulf Coast turned in a pair of great rounds to take the tournament lead. The Eagles, A-Sun rivals with Upstate, turned in rounds of 281 and 275. They stand 20-under as a team with a 556 total. Wofford is second at 571 and is followed by Troy (573), A-Sun foe Jacksonville (575), Winthrop (577), Arkansas State (579), Davidson (582), Elon (584), Georgia College & State University (585), Upstate (586), Charleston Southern (588), Armstrong Atlantic State (589), Georgia Southern (591) and Gardner-Webb (606).
Outside of Florida Gulf Coast, the field is bunched together. Upstate is just 15 strokes shy of second-place Wofford and is just seven shots out of a top five finish.
Hopper played his way into the top 30 in the tournament with his second round 68. He is tied for 28th with a 146 total. Spartanburg's Brad Sill was solid with back-to-back rounds of 75 and is tied for 47th. Tyler Comer (Pacolet Mills, S.C.) turned in rounds of 72 and 80, while McKenzie Oref (Easley, S.C.) carded rounds of 79 and 77. Adam Goins, also from Gaffney, is playing in the tournament as an individual and, in his collegiate debut, stands tied for 47th
with rounds of 76 and 74.
