Kannapolis, N.C. – Former USC Upstate men's golfing great and Gaffney, S.C., native Josh Gallman rallied with six birdies on his last 14 holes to shoot a 4-under-par 67 in the second round of the First Stage of PGA Q School Wednesday afternoon at the Club at Irish Creek. He moved up 32 positions on the leaderboard and stands tied for 18th midway through the stage.
Playing in the same group, fellow former Spartan Michael Lawrence (Easley, S.C.) recovered from a 77 on Tuesday to post even-par on Wednesday. He also moved up on the leaderboard and is tied for 65th.
Gallman started the day at 2-over for the tournament after posting a 73 on Tuesday. He made two bogeys and 16 pars in his round. Wednesday, he took his score to 4-over for the tournament with back-to-back bogeys on No. 2 and No. 3. However, he made birdie on No. 5 and No. 6 to get back to even for the round, and birdied four holes on the back nine to shoot 67. He currently sits tied for 18th at 2-under.
Lawrence was solid all day long, but one hole prevented him from taking it low. He opened with three birdies through the first five holes, but bogeyed the seventh. He went out in 2-under-par. After making bogey on the 10th, he recorded eagle on the par-5 13th to move to 3-under for the round and 3-over for the tournament. However, a triple bogey on the par-4 17th thwarted his chances of a round under par and he shot a 71 on the day to remain at six-over for the tournament.
As play got underway on Wednesday, the PGA announced that the top 23 players in the tournament will advance to the Second Stage of PGA Q School. Gallman, in a tie for 18th, has played his way into position to advance, but must navigate the course and the field over two more rounds.
