Charleston, S.C. - Josh Gallman fired a 1-under-par 71 in the first round and stood at 2-under when second round play was suspended for darkness, tied for fifth just two strokes out of the lead, at the Wendy's Charleston Shootout Sunday afternoon at the Links at Stono Ferry.
Gallman, a senior from Gaffney, S.C., birdied two of the first four holes in the second round to move to 3-under for the tournament. He bogeyed the ninth hole and shot even-par on the back nine when play was suspended. He has four holes remaining in his final round.
While Gallman has been strong, the Spartans have fallen two positions in the team standings since the start of the second round. Upstate began the afternoon round tied for eighth, but fell back into 10th place when play was suspended. The Spartans carded a 13-over-par 301 in the first round and was at 8-over in the second round when play was halted.
"Josh is hitting the ball so well," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "He has been strong and consistent. We are still challenged to take the talent that we have and put four good scores in there each round. When you can't get the third and fourth scores you need, it keeps you in the middle of the pack."
Nate Irvin has turned in a strong performance in his first tournament playing for Upstate. He played for North Greenville from 2006-08 before leaving the team and transferring to Upstate. A year and a half later, he has moved into 15th on the individual leaderboard, opening with a 75 in the first round and is at 2-under in his second round heading into the completion of the round Monday.
"Nate stepped in there and from the first shot of the day showed that he was here to play," said Lawton. "He had a hiccup at the end of the first round, but has been very poised and confident. He is such a competitor. I am really proud of him because it has been so long since he has played a competitive round of college golf."
Georgia has opened up an 18-stroke lead heading into the completion of play Monday. The Bulldogs opened the tournament with an 8-under-par 280 to lead by 15 strokes and has gained three strokes in the second round. As play was suspended, Radford moved into second and was followed by College of Charleston, Stephen F. Austin, Charleston Southern, Jacksonville, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, Stetson, Upstate, High Point, Towson, Longwood, Maryland and Navy. The Spartans are just five strokes out of sixth place and 10 out of fourth.
Upstate started the first round on fire and got it to 4-under-par and was in a battle for the lead. However, the Spartans had a tough four-hole stretch that cost the team and Upstate wound up with a 301 to open the tournament.
The 301 score put Upstate into a tie for eighth heading into the second round of play in the afternoon. The Spartans were tied with A-Sun rival Stetson. While they fell back, the Spartans entered the second round just six strokes out of second place.
Georgia opened the tournament with an 8-under-par 280 to take the lead by a whopping 15 strokes over Charleston Southern (295) in second. Stephen F. Austin stood third at 296 and was followed by College of Charleston (297), Jacksonville (298), Radford (298), High Point, (300), Upstate (301), Stetson (301), Gardner-Webb (302), Towson (305), Presbyterian (306), Longwood (309), Maryland (312) and Navy (326).
Gallman led the way for Upstate in the first round, firing a 1-under-par 71 to enter the second round tied for fourth. He birdied five holes, including three in a row on holes 9-11, but also carded four bogeys in the round. Irvin carded a 75 as the second-lowest Spartan in the round. Brian Horton turned in a solid 76, while Matthew Hopper finished with a 79. Michael Lawrence carded an 80.
