Roux Reaches Milestone And Upstate Posts Second Straight 4-3 Win Over Winthrop

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Jack Roux became the first player in the USC Upstate men's tennis team's history to record 15 singles wins in all four seasons of his career with his a 6-4, 6-1 decision that helped lift the No. 54 Spartans to a 4-3 win over South Carolina rival Winthrop on Tuesday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex, giving Upstate its third straight win.
The Spartans (13-5 overall) took a 4-1 lead before the Eagles (3-9 overall) closed the match with two super-set tiebreaker wins.
Upstate came back to win the doubles point after a loss at No. 1, with sophomores Edgar Rodriguez and Ramiro Blanco posting an 8-4 win over Dejon Bivens and Liran Levy at No. 3 and senior Jack Roux and junior Marco Linconir adding an 8-5 win over Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi at No. 2 to clinch the point.
With the 1-0, lead, Upstate continued to put the pressure on Winthrop, with senior Javier Tori posting his 76th career singles win in 6-1, 6-2 fashion over Diego Toledo at No. 3 and Roux adding his historic win, 6-4, 6-1, over Bivens at No. 4, giving Upstate a 3-0 lead. After a loss at No. 5, Rodriguez posted a 6-1, 7-6 (8) win over Ruppin at No. 2 to clinch the match.
Roux, from Puntas Arenas, Chile, has been remarkably steady for the Spartans, posting 17 wins as a freshman, 18 as a sophomore, a career-high 22 as a junior and he currently stands at 15-6 as a senior. He is second in career wins with 72 behind Tori, who has 76 thanks to two 20-win seasons.
The Spartans head to the Southeast Region's 10th-ranked North Florida on Friday for a 10 a.m. A-Sun match.
