Josh Gallman, from Gaffney, S.C., is tied for the lead with Mike Ballo, Jr. (St. John's) and J.D. Guiney (Rollins) entering the final round. He shot a 74 Tuesday and is at 2-under-par for the tournament.
The lowest score of the day was turned in by Old Dominion. The Monarchs shot a 285 to get within 10 strokes of Upstate for the lead. St. John's also shot a 285 and is 14 strokes back of the Spartans in third. Although the Spartans gave five strokes back to the field, Upstate maintained control of the tournament with consistent play.
"We didn't get off to a bad start, but it wasn't as low as what we wanted," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "We missed some birdies early and then pressed in the middle of the round. We finished the round shooting 4-under-par on the final four holes, which put us in position for the final round. The wind flipped to the exact opposite direction from yesterday. We teed off so early yesterday that we played seven holes in perfectly calm conditions. By the time we got around to the toughest holes in the middle of the round today, the course played different from yesterday and much longer. We still played a heck of a round. The guys are in a great frame of mind and are ready to play the third round."
Upstate owns a 36-hole total of 574 in first place. Old Dominion is second at 584 and is followed by St. John's (588), Rollins (589), Johnson & Wales (590), Loyola-Chicago (594), Indianapolis (601), Seton Hall (602), Bowling Green State (607), Ohio (609), James Madison (612), St. Thomas Aquinas (622), Wilmington (624) and Ft. Hays State (657).
Brian Horton carded a 73 to lead the Spartans on the day. His 1-over-par total was impressive in the wind. He stands tied for eighth heading into the final round Wednesday. Gallman, Nate Irvin and Michael Lawrence each finished at 74 to give Upstate four strong scores and a consistent effort on the day. Matthew Hopper added an 81 for the Spartans.
Irvin is in position to earn a top 10 finish. He stands 10th on the individual leaderboard. Hopper is tied for 21st, while Lawrence is tied for 27th.
